Trainers
All our trainers are actively working in the area of digitisation and digital archiving
David Larsen BA (UCT), DipCS, MCS (Regent College) founded Africa Media Online in March 2000. Since then he has pioneered non destructive preservation quality digitisation and long-term digital archiving in South Africa. He led the team that wrote the best practices for South Africa’s National Policy on the Digitisation of Heritage Resources and has led the development of Preservatio, Africa’s first digital preservation repository system. David has presented papers at leading conferences in Africa and around the world including at the IIF conference at the Library of Congress, Washington DC, IASA conference at the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, 2+3D Photography: Practice and Prophecies conference at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. He also pioneered Africa Media Online’s Heritage Digital Campus which has been run around the country in collaboration with institutions such as the National Library of South Africa, Iziko Museums of South Africa, the University of Fort Hare and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Deon Schutte worked as a freelance typesetter in the educational publishing industry in South Africa for many years. In 2018 he completed his B.INF (Bachelor of Information Science) through the University of South Africa and his B.INF Honours in 2019. Deon is a MPhil (Master of Philosophy, specialising in Digital Curation) candidate at the University of Cape Town. He serves as the Chair of the Association of Southern African Indexers and Bibliographers and is a Fellow of the South African Chefs Association. He works at Africa Media Online as project manager of a production team that is busy arranging and digitising the extensive archive of one of the prominent politicians of the anti-Apartheid struggle.
Hans van Dormolen is an independent imaging consultant. He received an IS&T Service Award in 2014 for his work in objective capture practices for cultural heritage imaging. And he was nominated for an IS&T Award in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Hans is a member of ISO TC42 JWG26 and a member of the society of Imaging Science & Technology (IS&T). Hans has presented courses & papers all over the world and he is author of the following Imaging & Preservation Imaging Guidelines which he developed on behalf of the National Library of The Netherlands:
