Dada Masilo - Giselle 2018

Dada Masilo’s GISELLE
Dada Masilo’s GISELLE interrogates this well-known narrative, digging deeper to create strong emotional and psychological foundations for the characters. This version is set in rural South Africa exploring traditional African rituals and ceremonies with Philip Miller’s composition using African voice, drums and the cello, violin, harp referencing Adolphe Adam’s original ballet score. Her
version places emphasis on the characters and motivations. Dada describes it as “ I did not want to box the women as victims; men also get heartbroken. The work is not about hate for men, but about betrayal, heartbreak, grief and revenge. And, unlike the ballet, not about forgiveness. It is NOT a pretty work… ’
