Snapshots of Accra: Teshie Coffin Makers

Tefelos Nyamso is a sculptor with 37 years experience continues a tradition started in the late 1950s of scultping coffins that depict the trade of the person who will use the coffin when they pass away. At the time of visiting him he was working on a coffin in the form of a corn cob that is being prepared for a farmer. The tradition comes from a part of Accra called Teshie and has now been exported to other parts of Ghana. As Mr Nyamso said, people come to funerals now not just to pay their respects, but to see the coffin. Mr Nyamso also produces other sculptures for collectors.
