Kip Keino: 50 years since he set a new record at the Olympics

Images of Kipchego “Kip” Keino who was born in Kipsano, Kenya on 17 January 1940. Keino began his international running career in 1962. From early on he trained under very high altitudes to prepare his body to perform under all conditions. Keino won several gold medals between 1962 and 1972, but it was his gold medal win and setting of a new record on 23 October 1968 at the Olympics in Mexico that catapulted him into stardom.(sahistory.org.za)

In 1973 Keino retired from running. He bought a farm, which together with his wife, they turned into an orphanage, the Kip Keino Children’s Home. His two sons have followed in his footsteps and ventured into sports.
