HELP

  • Registration
    • Registration on the site is free and gives you access to using lightboxes, calculating prices and purchasing online. If you require a 30-day account for purchases you can apply for one after registering by requesting an account application.
    • To register on Africa Media Online click on "register" at the top of any page.
    • Fill in your details as fully as possible and click "sign-up". You can immediately start to use the lightboxes.
    • An email will also be sent to you confirming your username and password.
  • Logging out
    • You can log out by clicking "logout" at the top right of any page .
  • Searching for images
    • Basic search:
      • To do a search put a word or phrase into the search box and click "search". By default the search function searches all images on the site.
      • If you would like to limit the search to only RM (rights managed) or Historical images untick the box that you don't want images from. You can also select to view only colour images by unticking the B&W tick box. If you are searching for an image of a recognisable person for advertising usage please tick the box "only model released"
    • Searching Within Results:
      • Having done a search, if you would like to search within the results you simply tick .search within results. under the search box and put a new term into the search box.
      • eg if you searched for .fish. and would like to search within those results for longnose fish you could just put .longnose. into the search box and tick .search within results"
    • Advanced Search:
      • On the bottom right of the top include there is an .advanced search. drop-down. Click on this to access the ability to search within a particular photographer. Put a search term in the search box, select a photographer from the drop-down list and click .go.. To view all the images of a particular photographer just put their full name in the search box.
      • The other advanced search filters are still being finalised and will become available in due course.
      • You can also filter results by orientation and media type
    • Picture Research:
      • If you cannot find the images you are looking for please contact our sales staff on pictures@africamediaonline.com giving full details of the images you require and the proposed usage
    • Managing Search Results:
      • Each image has under it the item number and either RM or Historical appears.
      • Mouse over an image to read the caption.
      • Click on " download comp " to access a low res image 700pixels on the longest side.
      • Items can be added to a lightbox to assist with selecting by clicking on "add to lightbox"
      • Click on the image to view a preview image and caption.
  • Browsing for images
    • To browse through galleries go to the .browse. tab at the top right of any page and select from the following types of galleries:
    • Features
      • Features can be purchased as a whole package with text and images or as individual images
    • Events
      • Galleries of images that have recently come in.
    • Compilations
      • Galleries of images around a theme or category - industry, tourism...etc. A good way to get a feel for the type of images we have. These compilations are only a small selection of the images we have on these themes, please do some keyword searches to find specific images.
    • CDs
      • Royalty Free images sold on a CD - all African themes
    • African Calendar
      • Galleries of images according to important dates - both anniversaries and special days.
  • Comping Images
    • Comping images can be downloaded by clicking on the link below the thumbnail or the link on the item detail pop-up page.
    • Comping images are 72dpi and 700 pixels on the longest side.
    • All usage of comping images is determined by our "terms and conditions". Comping images may only be used for selection purposes. All other uses including but not limited to web use, powerpoint presentations..etc is illegal.
  • Lightboxes
    • When you are logged in you have the ability to use the lightbox functionality.
    • Lightbox modes:
      • Minimised lightbox:
        • When you have done a search a "floating" lightbox will appear at the bottom of your page. By default this lightbox is minimised.
      • Maximised lightbox:
        • Click on "maximise" to increase the size of the floating lightbox.
      • Open lightbox:
        • Click on "view lightbox" to view the whole lightbox and the full range of tools available. You can also access the open lightbox from the link on the top right of any page.
      • Adding images to a lightbox:
        • First give your lightbox a name. The easiest way is in the floating version at the bottom of your search results page. Click on "new lightbox" and name the lightbox. This lightbox will be your "current" lightbox and appear at the top of your drop-down list of lightboxes. You can make any of your other lightboxes your current lightbox by selecting them from the drop-down list.
        • Click on "add to lightbox" link under any image or on the image details page. The image is added to the current lightbox, and the words change to "added to lightbox".
        • If you have you lightbox minimised you can see when an image is added as the number of items in the lightbox increases.
        • If you have your lightbox maximised you can see when an image is added as a tiny version of the image appears in the floating lightbox and the number of items increases.
        • To view the full lightbox as thumbnails click on "open lightbox"
      • Lightbox options:
        • Email: From the minimised and maximised floating lightbox you can email a lightbox link. A pop-up appears that allows you to put in an email address, subject line and a message.
        • Email comps: The images in your lightbox can be emailed as comps attached to the email. This email also has the lightbox link in it. The comps are 700pixels longest side and 72dpi, so be careful not to try and send yourself too many in one email-around 20 is safe. A pop-up appears that allows you to put in an email address, subject line and a message.
        • Rename: You can change the name of your lightbox.
        • Delete: This allows you to delete a lightbox.
        • Removing items: This can be done individually by clicking "remove" under each image, or by ticking the boxes of those images you want to delete and then clicking "delete selected items"
        • Select all: To delete all the images in your lightbox "select all" and then "delete selected items"
        • Share: This function allows you to share the lightbox you have created with another Africa Media Online user. This tool is useful for people doing picture research on behalf of others. To do this you need to go into the lightbox that you want to share and click "share". Then you need to know the other user's username and you can then effectively add a copy of the lightbox you have created to their list of lightboxes. For the other user to view and work with the lightbox you have shared with them, they simply login on the site with their username and password and click on "lightbox" just as you did. They will find the lightbox in their drop down list of lightboxes.
        • Copy: This function allows you to make yourself a copy of the lightbox you have created. This tool is useful for creating a few similar, but slightly different lightboxes. To do this you need to go into the lightbox that you want to share and click "copy". Give the new lightbox a different name. You will now have 2 lightboxes with the same images in both of them.
        • Move: This function allows you to move images between lightboxes. This tool is useful when you are doing a few searches at once with different lightboxes. Particularly if you have put some images into the wrong lightbox. To do this you first need to create the lighbox you want to move the image TO. Then you go into the lightbox that you want to move images FROM and click "move" Select the lightbox to move the images TO from the drop down list.
    • Many other options, currently greyed out, will come available in the weeks and months ahead.
  • Purchasing images
    • Images can be purchased by credit card or on 30-day account.
    • Credit card purchases:
      • 5% discount is given on all credit card purchases.
      • We accept payment by VISA, Mastercard and Dinersclub cards.
      • Put items you want to purchase into your basket.
      • Click on "basket" top right of any page
      • Price your images according to usage - 5% will be deducted when you come to pay if you use a credit card
      • Click "purchase"
      • Check your details as these will appear on your invoice
      • Fill in accounts department contact details
      • Confirm and proceed
      • You will then be transferred to www.vcs.co.za (Virtual Card Systems) - our secure credit card vendor - where you will enter your details
      • If you are a South African credit card holder you may be asked by vcs for your pin code. This is an extra safety precaution from vcs. If you do not know your code the site gives the details of where to get the information from your own bank. It is usually a quick and easy process, and may be best to phone your bank on the number given.
      • NOTE: After payment if your browser warns you that information is being taken across to our site, please do not click "cancel" as you will not then be directed to download the images. The warning should say "You are now LEAVING a secure site. Any information you enter HEREAFTER is not encrypted..." so your credit card details will be safe.
      • If payment is approved you will go through to the final page which includes your items to download and your invoice
      • Your invoice will be emailed to you.
      • The information about your purchases is kept in your Account (top right of any page) under .track my account.
    • Account purchases:
      • Account applications can be requested from pictures@africamediaonline.com Once your account approved you will be able to download images using these instructions:
      • Put items you want to purchase into your basket.
      • Click on "basket" top right of any page
      • Price your images according to usage
      • Click "purchase"
      • Check your details as these will appear on your invoice
      • Fill in accounts department contact details
      • Confirm and proceed
      • You will go through to the final page which includes your items to download and your invoice
      • Your invoice will be emailed to you.
      • The information about your purchases is kept in your Account (top right of any page) under .track my account.
  • Licenses
    • Each image is either sold on an RM or Historical license:
      • Rights-managed (RM) - Rights Managed images are priced according to usage. You can only use the image once for the agreed usage unless a wider license is negotiated.
      • Historical images - are our premium images and are also priced according to usage but at a higher rate. You can only use the image once for the agreed usage unless a wider license is negotiated.
